Beginning on Friday, Sept. 7 at 7 p.m., the Blue Hens (1-2) will travel south on I-95 to Baltimore and play Loyola (1-1-2) at the Ridley Athletic Complex.
The Blue Hens are looking to build off their first victory of the season as Delaware knocked off Siena by a 1-0 score on Sunday.
Delaware freshman Tara DiTaranto registered her first collegiate goal in the 1-0 victory over the Saints.
“Our expectations are to go out there and be better than what we were last weekend,” Delaware head coach Scott Grzenda said. “If we continue to build on what we've worked on then we can start cashing in on some opportunities.”
From 1990-98, Delaware and Loyola played eight matches, with the Blue Hens owning a 5-3 record over the Greyhounds.
Loyola head coach Katherine Remy Vettori returns to a Greyhounds squad that reached the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference title game a year ago with an 8-12-1 record. The Greyhounds are led by senior Nichole Schiro, the reigning MAAC Offensive Player of the Year after she scored 13 goals with four assists last season.
“They are a very athletic team and they do very well within their conference,” said Grzenda. “I think the girls will be very excited to play in their new stadium and if we come out and play our game, we will do very well.”
The Blue Hens will finish the weekend with a trip to Delaware State on Sunday, Sept. 9 at 1 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.
Delaware has a 3-0 record over the Hornets all-time, including a 2-0 victory a year ago.
Delaware State head coach Peter Hulem leads a Hornets team that tallied a 2-15-2 record last season. DSU returns three of its four top scorers from last season in Chelsea Boursiquot, Jeanette Salgado, and Theresa Wappett. Wappett led the Hornets with three goals and two assists last year.
“It will be a very interesting match since we now have their old head coach, Nitan Soni, now part of our staff,” Grzenda added. “We intend to come out and use as much athleticism as we can and put the ball in the net.”
Following the weekend set, the Blue Hens begin their home schedule when Delaware tackles Saint Joseph's on Friday, Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. at Delaware Mini Stadium.
