RICHMOND, Va. – With her 40th career double double against Old Dominion and a two-game average of 23.5 points and 10.0 rebounds, the Colonial Athletic Association has named senior Elena Delle Donne the women's basketball Player of the Week.
Delle Donne collected 28 points and 13 rebounds in Delaware's 63-46 win at Old Dominion Sunday, the 77th 20-plus point game of her career.
Earlier in the week, the All-American posted 19 points and seven rebounds as the Blue Hens routed George Mason in their CAA opener, 62-27.
In the game, Delaware recorded its best defensive effort in 40 years as the 27 points allowed was the lowest since 1973.
For the season, Delle Donne averages 23.4 points and 10.6 rebounds per contest through eight games played.
Additionally, she holds a season average of .953 (41-for-43) from the charity stripe. The forward has tallied 35 straight free throws since Dec. 20, which ranks third in school history, behind the school-record 52 straight and 39 straight, both her own records.
The Hens (11-3; 2-0 CAA) have won six straight games, including 21 straight in CAA play. They are currently ranked No. 2 in the CollegeInsider Mid-Major Poll (Jan. 7) and have received four votes in the AP Top 25 Poll (Jan. 14).
Drexel's Hollie Mershon shares CAA Player of the Week honors with Delle Donne while James Madison's Precious Hall was named the Rookie of the Week.
Delaware continues CAA road play Tuesday as they travel to Boston, Mass. to take on Northeastern (9-5; 2-1 CAA) at 7 p.m.
