Carmen Lai and Dorothy Safron Advance at USTA/ITA Northeast Regional

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Sophomore Carmen Lai (Shatin, Hong Kong) and senior Dorothy Safron (New York, N.Y.) advanced Friday afternoon on their first day of play at the 2013 USTA/ITA Northeast Regional, held at the University of Virginia.
As a duo, Lai and Safron defeated Navy's Sam Droop and Erin Snook, 8-4, in the doubles main draw. The pair will play Virginia Tech's Raluca Mita and Francesca Fusinato at 9 a.m. Saturday.
In singles action, Lai went 1-1 on the day and will continue play Saturday against Penn State's Katherine Whiteaway in the qualifying singles draw. Lai fell to Pitt's Amanda Wickman, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2, in the singles qualifying draw before defeating Brittany Yang from Liberty, 6-3, 0-6, 1-0 (8).
HEN SCRATCHINGS
§ Carmen Lai is 9-7 in singles action this season and 27-15 overall in her two-year career at Delaware.
§ In two years playing together, Carmen Lai and Dorothy Safron are 22-15 in doubles play, good to tie for eighth place in UD history with Julia Kratzer and Mary Wolfenden (1990-95). This season, the duo are currently 8-3 overall.
§ Dorothy Safron holds a career doubles mark of 56-34, which ties her for eighth all-time with Rebecca Fearins (1993-98) and Karen Greenstein (1996-00).
§ The Blue Hens are 42-42 in singles and 24-14 in doubles action this season.
