Blue Hen Women's Tennis Slips By Rutgers, 4-3

MANASQUAN, N.J. – The University of Delaware women's tennis team earned their second straight win Sunday afternoon as the Blue Hens narrowly slid by Rutgers University, 4-3, at the Atlantic Club.
“This was a very close match against a solid Rutgers squad,” stated UD head coach Laura Travis. “Our training is beginning to show and our confidence in ourselves is continually increasing.
Delaware fell early in the singles matches with losses in the first and second flights.
Freshman Carmen Lai (at right) followed in the no. 3 slot with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Mariam Zein. Fellow freshman Nataliya Naumova tied the match at 2-2 with her 6-3, 6-0 win against Noor Judeh.
Sophomore Kim Milla wrapped up singles play with a 6-4, 6-4 victory against Lindsay Balsamo to tie things at 3-3, putting the pressure on each squad's doubles participants.
Junior Dorothy Safron teamed up with Lai to pick up a close 8-6 win over Rutgers' Vanessa Petrini and Zein.
Freshman Danea Jonjic' and junior Olivia Heim then fell, 8-1, to bring the match down to the wire with Naumova and Milla pairing up for the final doubles match-up.
The duo sailed by the Scarlet Knights with an 8-3 triumph to give the Blue Hens the 4-3 win to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Delaware continues road play as they travel to Lehigh next Saturday with a 3:30 p.m. match.
