Milestones Abound as No. 20/23 Delaware Women's Basketball Sweeps Towson in Season Series, 77-55

TOWSON, Md. -- Seniors Elena Delle Donne and Danielle Parker (at right) continued to etch their marks in University of Delaware women's basketball history Thursday evening as Delle Donne collected her 900th career rebound and Parker registered her 1,000th career point in the Blue Hens' 77-55 Colonial Athletic Association victory over Towson University. In total, four different Blue Hens scored in double figures for the No. 20 UD.
Delle Donne became just the sixth player in program history with her rebounding mark and finished the night with 906 career boards. The All-American forward also tallied her 41st career double double with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Delle Donne added three blocks and two assists in 29 minutes of play against the Tigers. She needs just 10 points to tie the all-time CAA scoring mark at 2,667, set by James Madison's Dawn Evans (2007-11).
Parker also joined elite company as she calmly knocked down six free throws en route to a 12-point performance to become the 24th player in Delaware women's basketball history to collect 1,000 career points. The forward collected eight rebounds in the win.
Parker joins Delle Donne and fellow classmate Lauren Carra in the 1,000-point club at UD.
“I'm happy with the win and I'm certainly happy for Elena and Danielle,” stated Delaware head coach Tina Martin. “To have three 1,000-point scorers on one squad is a great feat. These three are very special players in Delaware women's basketball history. It is truly a terrific accomplishment.”
Trumae Lucas came off the bench to add 14 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field while Carra put up 12 points for Delaware (19-3, 10-0 CAA), who won their 14th straight game and 29th straight regular season CAA contest.
Towson (7-15) received 16 points from guard Tanisha McTiller while Dominique Johnson added 14 points and Nyree Williams recorded a double double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Delaware swept the season series from the Tigers after also downing Towson 76-44 on Jan. 20 at the Bob Carpenter Center.
The Tigers kept things close in the first 10 minutes of the game and were up at one point by three before the Hens eventually went on a 27-4 run to go up, 33-13.
Towson slowly chipped away at the lead and gathered some momentum going into halftime, but Delaware still held a comfortable 45-28 advantage at the break.
The Hens almost became too comfortable to start the second half as Williams took things into her own hands and scored seven straight points and bring the Tigers within 10 to open the stanza.
“It doesn't matter what the score or time on the clock is,” Martin remarked. “You have to mentally know that the game isn't over until the end. Hopefully this is a lesson learned to some of our players that you have to stay focused, no matter how big the lead.”
Delaware was able to bounce back however and would go up by as much as 25 off of a three-pointer from freshman Courtni Green.
The CAA-leading Blue Hens next travel to Harrisonburg, Va. to take on James Madison University at 2 p.m. Sunday. The Dukes currently sit at 15-7 overall and 9-1 in conference play. Additionally, JMU has won 12 of their last 13 games and sit in second place in league standings.
