The five standouts include defender Kaz Boschen of Yonkers, N.Y. (Hastings High School), forward Angus Maloney of Wilmington, Del. (Tower Hill School), midfielder Jaime Martinez of Madrid, Spain (American School of Madrid), defender Troy McCartney of Voorhees, N.J. (Bishop Eustace HS), and defender Gil Simonetti of Palo Alto, Calif. (St. Francis HS).
In addition, Borja Barbero, a goalkeeper from Valladolid, Spain (Apostolado HS), has transferred from Iona College and Nick DiRienzo, a forward from Wilmington, Del. (Charter School of Wilmington), has transferred from Michigan State University. Both will be eligible to play for Delaware this fall.
“We are delighted to be able to attract our 2013 class to the University of Delaware,” said Hennessy, who will begin his eighth season at the helm of the Blue Hens this coming fall. “It is a group as diverse as it is talented that will join a body of players their equal on both counts. The new lads I'm sure will be anxious and excited to join the returning players and they already know they need to come in very fit from the start in order to compete over the course of a short pre-season. Each player has a strong background of playing and been exposed to some very good coaching and competition in their respective environments, so I hope the best for each of them on their new journey at the University of Delaware.
“We have enjoyed a very good spring, conceding only one goal in six games against quality and established programs such as Maryland, St. Johns and Monmouth,” continued Hennessy. “The staff was very pleased with this and we feel that we found an identity for the group as we prepare for a 2013 season that seems closer than ever. One of our goals this year will be to return to the CAA championships for the third time in the last four years, a unique achievement for the men's soccer program.”
Boschen was a four-year starter for the New York Red Bulls Academy club team and led the squad to the USSDA national championship in 2012. Before moving full-time to academy competition prior to his senior year, he was a three-year starter at midfield at Hastings High School. He led the 2010 team to a 9-6-1 record and the conference title and was named team Most Valuable Player and all-section as a junior in 2011.
“Kaz has spent the last few years in one of the most competitive youth environments in the U.S. and continues to grow as a player,” said Hennessy. “He has impressed the staff as a very mature lad who we hope will prove to be a future leader for the program.”
Maloney led the Hockessin Strikers Premiere club team to four state titles in 2007-10 before joining the Baltimore Bays Chelsea Academy Under 18 team for the 2012-13 season. This past season he led the squad to a No. 2 national ranking. Maloney also was a Region 1 player who was selected to play in an interregional event in Hoover, Ala. and also competed at an international tournament in Germany.
Before moving full-time to academy competition prior to his senior year, Maloney was four-year varsity player at Tower Hill School who earned first team All-State honors as a sophomore and junior and third team All-State honors as a freshman. He netted 33 goals and 22 assists for his career and tied the school record for goals in a season as a sophomore in 2010. He also played baseball at Tower Hill and was a two-time all-conference shortstop.
A citizen of Australia, Maloney is the son of Kevin Maloney, who serves as the State of Delaware's deputy attorney general. Angus' uncle, Dan Shotzberger, played football at Delaware and was a member of the 1974 national runner-up squad.
“Angus is a local Delaware lad who spent last season vying for time with a good Baltimore Bays team,” said Hennessy. “He has put himself in a position to improve on the pace of the game, which he will need at the college level.”
Martinez, a midfielder, attended the American School of Madrid but did not play high school soccer. He was a long-time standout for the Atletico Madrid Club Team.
“Jaime spent most of his youth with Atletico Madrid,” said Hennessy. “He has a strong technical component and a very good soccer IQ which we prize here at Delaware.”
A National Honor Society student, McCartney was most recently a standout for the NJSA 04 Academy Team in South Jersey. Before moving full-time to academy competition prior to his senior year, he was a three-year starter as a center midfielder at Bishop Eustace High School. He led the squad to a three-year record of 27-19-3 and earned all-conference honors as a sophomore and junior when he led the team in assists. He served as team co-captain as a junior.
McCartney's aunt, Michelle Rosenbaum, was an All-American field hockey player at Delaware in the 1980's and his mother, Annemarie, played field hockey in college at North Carolina.
“Troy is a very bright young man who we expect very good things from in and out of the classroom,” said Hennessy. “His club is led by current U.S. Under-20 head coach Tab Ramos, so he has been exposed to a good soccer education in the Academy system.”
Simonetti has enjoyed an outstanding club career as a three-year starter for the DeAnza Force Academy, leading the team to the playoffs in 2010-11 and serving as team captain in 2011-12. Prior to joining DeAnza, he played for the Norcal State Club Team for two years in 2009-10.
Before moving full-time to academy competition prior to his junior year, he was a two-year starter at St. Francis High School and led his squad to the California state championship in 2009 and a sport in the quarterfinals in 2010. He earned the school's Scholar-Athlete Award twice.
“Gil is under the tutelage of the Santa Clara University coaching staff at the moment and two very experienced college coaches in Cam Rast and Eric Yamamoto,” said Hennessy. “There will no surprises for Gil (about the college game) once he reaches Delaware.”
Barbero, who also played for the Real Valladolid Club team for nine years, will have junior eligibility at Delaware after starting the last two seasons in goal at Marist. As a freshman in 2011, he earned Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) All-Rookie honors, was a two-time MAAC Rookie of the Week, was named to the MAAC All-Tournament team, and was selected to the NSCAA All-North Atlantic Conference first team.
He started all 20 games in 2011 and posted a record of 15-4-1 as he recorded a 0.97 goals against average, 62 saves (.765 save pct.), and four shutouts. As a sophomore in 2012, he started all 18 games, posted a 7-11 record, had a 1.94 goals against average, a .679 save percentage on 74 saves, and recorded one shutout.
”Borja brings experience to us and will make the goalkeeping position a deeper and more competitive position,” said Hennessy. “His impact on the training intensity of our keepers has been immediate and positive.”
DiRienzo, who did not see action in two seasons at Michigan State, returns to his home state where he was a standout at Wilmington Charter High School. A four-year letterwinner and two-year captain, DiRienzo was the Delaware State High School Player of the Year, earned NSCAA All-American notice, and was the Gatorade High School Player of the Year for the state as a senior in 2010.
A three-year all-conference selection, DiRienzo led his team to a No. 1 state ranking as a senior when the squad was rated as high as No. 12 in the nation. He scored 31 goals and dished out 17 assists during his career. He also played club soccer for Delaware United Blizzard, helping the team claim a Delaware State Cup championship in both 2009 and 201 and a Disney Showcase championship in 2010.
“Nick is another local product, joining us from the Big Ten conference where he spent the past year,” said Hennessy. “He joins a solid group for the fall and will look to compete for important playing time.”
Delaware, which captured the Colonial Athletic Association title and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2011, will begin the 2013 season Aug. 24 at Monmouth.
