NEWARK, Del. – As a member of Team USA, senior goalkeeper Jess Levy earned a Gold Medal at the Maccabiah Games in Israel. Team USA defeated Israel in the Gold Medal contest, 6-1.
Levy and Team USA went unbeaten at the Maccabiah games allowing only two goals in seven games while outscoring its opponents 43-2. Israel settled for the Sliver medal while Canada claimed the Bronze medal over Australia.
“It was a really great experience, said Levy. “I went in thinking the game itself would be really different but what I found was that soccer is truly a universal sport. Once we started playing, it was like playing against another university. The real differences came after the game when we had a chance to talk about where we were from and discuss our cultures with each other.”
The Maccabiah Games is the third-largest sporting event in the world, with more than 1,100 U.S. athletes participating this year and 7,000 total athletes representing more than 50 countries. The Games are held every four years and serve as an international sporting event for Jewish athletes.
While in Israel, Levy was able to tour parts of the country. Besides competing and winning the Gold Medal, Levy highlighted floating in the Dead Sea, praying at the Western Wall, climbing to the top of the Masada and visiting family as her favorite moments while overseas.
Levy and the Blue Hens take part in their second exhibition contest of the 2013 pre-season Friday, Aug. 16 at George Washington. Delaware opens the regular season at St. John's on Aug. 23 at 7 p.m.
