NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware men's soccer team broke away from a scoreless deadlock at the half by scoring three second-half goals as the Blue Hens defeated Saint Bonaventure, 3-0, Friday evening at the Delaware Mini-Stadium.
The Blue Hens are now 4-1 on the young season, including a perfect 4-0 at home. The Bonnies dropped their first match of the year and are also 4-1 on the campaign.
Blue Hen freshman Guillermo Delgado continued his early season success by scoring a pair of goals, including the game-winner just 3:54 into the second half. Delgado took a feed from Luke Oostdyk and scored from 22 yards out to give Delaware a lead it would not relinquish.
UD doubled its lead with 15:44 to play, when Joe Dipre collected a pass from Vincent Mediate and beat Bonnies goalkeeper Jeremy Figler from 18 yards out to make it a 2-0 game. Delgado then capped the scoring with just under five minutes to play with his eighth goal of the season. Delgado scored from six yards out, with Mark Garrity and Tobias Müller collecting assists.
Delgado is now tied for the Division I lead with eight goals, along with Pete Caringi of UMBC. No other player had more than five entering Friday's action.
UD goalkeeper Borja Barbero made four saves in the Blue Hen net, recording the first shutout of his Delaware career.
"Very happy for the lads to keep a clean sheet tonight. It was a point of focus tonight for us and to do so against an undefeated team, I am pleased for them. St. Bonaventure gave us all we could handle to start, but we found our feet in the second half. We are very pleased with the quality of play and earning the win."
