NEWARK, Del. – In its first week of action, University of Delaware men's soccer freshman forward Guillermo Delgado has earned Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week honors. Delgado earns the first CAA Rookie of the Week honor for the last Blue Hens since Joe Dipre on Nov. 5, 2012.
Delgao scored three goals in Delaware season-opening weekend as the Blue Hens triumphed over UNLV, 3-1 on Friday and 3-2 (OT) over Seattle Sunday afternoon. The freshman scored Delaware's first two goals against the Rebels Friday evening, including the game-winner. The multi-goal performance allowed Delgado to become just the eighth freshman in Delaware program history to score two goals in his first collegiate outing. The two-goal performance in the season-opener is the first by a Delaware freshman since John Sellers in 1988.
Against the Redhawks Sunday, Delgado scored the game-tying goal in the 11th minute of the contest. The freshman currently leads the Blue Hens in points (6), goals (3) and has registered a .714 shot on goal percentage in his first two collegiate contests.
“It has been a fabulous start for the program with record crowd support and two important wins. The soccer was very good this weekend and we had a lot of quality play from the squad. Of course, individually the numbers show that Guillermo claims the accolades, but he will also be the first to acknowledge that this weekend, the team was the true star.”
Ian HennessyDelaware is off to a 2-0 start for the first time since 2006. Delgado and the Blue Hens return to Delaware Mini-Stadium this Friday, Sept. 6 for a 7:30 p.m. start against Manhattan. Admission is free.
