NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware is off to its first 3-0 start since 1985 after a 3-2 win over Manhattan Friday evening at Delaware Mini-Stadium.
The Blue Hens scored the first goal of the game at 5:57 of the first half when Ben Sampson tallied his first score of the season after a cross from Prince Nartey.
Manhattan responded with a score of its own less than 10 minutes later to tie the contest, 1-1.
Delaware took the 2-1 lead at the 64th minute of the contest when forward Joe Dipre (at right) scored his first goal of the season. Dipre's first goal of his sophomore season was unassisted.
Freshman forward Guillermo Delgado added to the Blue Hen advantage at the 82nd minute of the game after a pass from Vincent Mediate. The goal marks Delgado's fourth of the season.
The Jaspers scored in the 87th to come within one of the Blue Hens, but Delaware stifled their comeback effort to earn the 3-2 victory.
“I am thrilled by the response of the team today to win our third straight. I certainly felt that they wanted to create their own little pieces of history, however small. Once again the crowd was terrific and we used their positive energy to hit the net again 3 times with some excellent finishing.”
