Delaware Bounces Back With 74-65 Victory Over Northeastern

NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware women's basketball team jumped out to a 15-2 lead and never looked back as the Blue Hens picked up a 74-65 victory over Northeastern Thursday evening at the Bob Carpenter Center.
UD spread the offensive wealth against Northeastern as four players scored at least 10 points on the night.
Blue Hens senior Kelsey Buchanan (South Riding, Va.) led the way once again for Delaware (12-6, 4-3 CAA) as the center scored a game-high 26 points in addition to pulling down seven rebounds.
Redshirt sophomore Joy Caracciolo (Manassas, Va.) tied a career-best with 14 points while freshman Hannah Jardine (St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada) tallied her first double digit scoring game with 10 points. Sophomore Courtni Green (Winchester, Va.) added 12 points and five assists in the victory.
Delaware redshirt freshman Jodi Salyer (Roanoke, Va.) tied a career-high with six of the Blue Hens' 17 assists.
The win snapped a rare two-game losing streak for the two-time CAA defending champion Hens, who defeated the Huskies for the 24th straight time and improved to 16-2 all-time against NU in Newark.
Northeastern (7-12, 1-5 CAA), which lost its fifth straight game and fell for the eighth time in the last nine outings, received 21 points and six rebounds from Samantha DeFreese. Kazzidy Stewart came off the bench to add 17 points while Jewel Tunstull contributed 15 points and a team-best eight rebounds.
“This team is so young and they can be so fragile at times, but they are constantly learning. We needed this win desperately after tough back-to-back losses. It was great to see them come out strong in the first 10 minutes and that was probably the first time we've done that in a month. Tonight they really stepped up, even when Northeastern made a run.”

“It was very important that we continued to keep our foot on the gas and make sure to keep scoring, followed by getting stops. After coming back from a 22-point lead at Charleston, we didn't want to be on the opposite end of that and have an opponent come back on us. That game showed us that anything can happen and you have to play all 40 minutes. The way we played in the second half at Charleston is how we want to play an entire game.”

“Our defense starting pulling down rebounds and we really stuck together as a unit on defense. We rotated, helped on traps down low and that's what really kept us going in the second half. Northeastern was a double threat because they could shoot and they could drive, so it wasn't like we could completely back off. We definitely had to be focused defensively as they were no easy task.”
