TOWSON, Md. – Despite falling behind early, the University of Delaware field hockey team fought back for a 2-1 victory Sunday afternoon in Colonial Athletic Association action at Towson.
Heather Jenney gave the Tigers (2-10, 0-3 CAA) a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute, but the Blue Hens (9-5, 3-0 CAA) tied things at 1-1 in the 16th minute as sophomore Esmée Peet (Zeewolde, The Netherlands/RSG Slingerbos) scored off a penalty corner. Classmate Meghan Winesett (Centreville, Va./Westfield) assisted on the Peet goal.
The second half remained scoreless until sophomore Marjelle Scheffers (Amersfoort, The Netherlands/Stedelijk Gymnasium Johan van Oldenbarneveld) recorded her first career game-winning goal in the 50th minute off a rebounded corner shot.
Delaware outshot Towson, 20-7, and held a 17-3 advantage in penalty corners.
Freshman Emmeline Oltmans (Baarn, The Netherlands/Het Baarnsch Lyceum) collected three saves in the win while Towson's Emilee Woodall was credited with the loss despite recording 12 saves.
“This was a great win for our program when taking in consideration the tough field conditions. The team played hard and found a way to secure the desired 'W,' allowing us to be 3-0 in CAA play. We're looking forward to giving the players a couple of days to recharge and further recover before beginning to prepare for the last stretch of our regular season.”
