NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware field hockey team held a 1-0 advantage with 3:11 remaining in regulation, but Columbia University roared back with two consecutive goals for the win at Fred P. Rullo Stadium Sunday afternoon.
Jacki Coveleski(Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) tipped in a penalty corner goal off the stick of sophomore Esmée Peet (Zeewolde, The Netherlands/RSG Slingerbos) to give UD the 1-0 lead in the 45th minute.UD (9-6) looked like it was going to pull out the victory before the Lions (10-4) received their first goal of the day from Meredith Kalberer in the 67th minute to tie things at 1-1.
Columbia was then awarded with back-to-back penalty corners in the 69th minute. Christina Freibott capitalized on the second penalty corner and was able to tip in a pass from Zoe Blake for the 2-1 game-winning goal with 1:13 left on the clock.
Delaware freshman Emmeline Oltmans (Baarn, The Netherlands/Het Baarnsch Lyceum) finished the day with three total saves and was credited with the loss.
Columbia's Kimberly Pianucci earned the 'W' following a nine-save performance.
“We played phenomenal hockey today, but at the end of the day, phenomenal hockey doesn't always bring you what you're looking for in a win. We had a lot of good things happen today, but we also learned that one goal is not enough to secure the victory. This serves as a reminder that if we're in the position to put teams away, we have to do so and if we're behind, we have to believe that we can fight until the end to put ourselves in the game and come from behind to win.”
Jacki Coveleski
“We had many opportunities on the offensive end today, but we need to continue to work on our execution.”
Junior Michaela Patzner
“I think our offense did a really good job today. Our movement was good and the scoring opportunities were there, but we just didn't capitalize on them like we need to.”
· Prior to the game, the Blue Hens honored the 10-year anniversary of the UD squad that won the Colonial Athletic Association Championship in 2004. Among those that were in attendance included Amber Deimler, Amanda Warrington DiStefano, Katie Evans, Lindsay Heppner, Kaili Kao Janus, Sarah Mills Keever and Stephanie Swain.
· Delaware snapped a season-best five-game winning streak with the loss.
