NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware softball team won seven of its eight games during the last four weekends as the Blue Hens recently concluded a successful fall exhibition season.
Delaware kicked off the slate by sweeping a home doubleheader from Villanova on Sunday, Sept. 21, taking the opener 2-1 before edging the Wildcats 17-14 in a slugfest during the nightcap. The Blue Hens remained at the UD Softball Stadium the following Sunday, dropping the first game to Kutztown 3-2 but earning the twinbill split with a 7-0 shutout in the second.
Delaware played its only road games of the fall on Sunday, Oct. 5 when the Blue Hens swept a doubleheader at Princeton, 7-0 and 2-0. UD then wrapped up its schedule this past Sunday by hosting Rider, as the Blue Hens posted 5-1 and 1-0 victories over the Broncs.
The Blue Hen pitching staff fired four shutouts during the fall, and allowed just one run during the final five contests of the exhibition season. Meanwhile the Blue Hen lineup averaged 5.4 runs per game, scoring at least seven runs three times.
“We received outstanding pitching performances throughout the fall,” said Delaware head coach Jaime Wohlbach, who will be entering her fifth year in Newark this spring. “Our team is much more athletic this year and our freshmen gained a lot of valuable experience, so we are looking forward to the spring season.”
The Blue Hens open their 2015 campaign with five games at the Charleston Southern Tournament on Feb. 13-15. UD kicks off its home slate on Mar. 7 against Hartford and Coppin State.
