Softball Extends Win Streak to 10 with Sweep of Kennesaw State

NEWARK, Del. - University of Delaware softball finished off a third-straight Conference USA series sweep and won its 10th game in a row after winning both games of a doubleheader against Kennesaw State, 9-1 in five innings and 9-4. Gianna Costaro recorded her 100th career hit on a home run, while Katie Scheivert played in the 200th game of her career. UD has won 10 straight games for the seventh time in program history and for the fourth time in the last three seasons. The nine straight conference wins are also tied for the fourth-longest streak in program history.
HEN HIGHLIGHTS, GAME ONE
- Maddie Diamond went 1-for-2 with a three-run home run and drew a walk.
- Allie Nankivell had a hit, two walks, two runs scored, and a stolen base.
- Scheivert had two RBIs, scored a run, and walked once.
- Costaro had two RBIs while recording a hit, a walk, and a run scored.
- Sorella Gallucci was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and a double.
- Grace Hausamann was 1-for-1 with an RBI single and a stolen base.
- Kristen Luzon was 1-for-2.
- Kylie Wilkerson pitched all five innings for the complete game, allowing one unearned run on three hits and one walk.
HEN HIGHLIGHTS, GAME TWO
- Gianna Costaro went 3-for-4 with two home runs, five RBIs, and two runs scored.
- Sydney Shaffer was 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs scored, three RBIs, and a walk.
- Nankivell reached base in all four plate appearances with three walks and a single and scored two runs.
- Scheivert walked twice and scored three runs.
- Ryleigh Thomas went 2-for-3.
- Sorella Gallucci walked twice and stole a base.
- Karli Challburg earned the win with 4.1 innings pitched, struck out four, and allowed no walks and two earned runs.
- Claire Woods earned the save by recording the final eight outs, allowing just one hit while striking out two.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME ONE
- Wilkerson pitched a hitless first, stranding a runner at second base.
- Nankivell and Scheivert walked to lead off the game. Costaro had an RBI single to score Nankivell, then Diamond hit a three-run homer to put Delaware ahead 4-0.
- KSU scored an unearned run in the second.
- Gallucci doubled to lead off the second and scored on an RBI single by Nankivell. Scheivert then drove home Nankivell on a sacrifice fly to give UD a 6-1 lead.
- Wilkerson pitched scoreless innings in the fourth and fifth, allowing just one hit in each inning.
- Delaware pushed three runs across in the fourth to go up 9-1. Hausamman dumped a single into left to score Caylin Blazys, Scheivert was hit by a pitch to score Gallucci, and Costaro hit a sacrifice fly to put UD in range of a run-rule win.
- Wilkerson threw a hitless fifth inning to seal the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME TWO
- Challburg stranded a runner at third with one out to pitch a scoreless first.
- Delaware scored three in the bottom half as Nankivell and Scheivert again walked to lead off the game. Shaffer, Costaro, and Diamond each had RBI singles to give UD the early lead.
- Challburg pitched a scoreless second, but Kennesaw State scored two unearned runs in the third. She then pitched a perfect fourth with two strikeouts.
- Shaffer and Costaro hit back-to-back home runs in the fourth to put Delaware up 6-2. Costaro's home run was her 100th career hit.
- KSU scored two runs in the fifth before Woods entered in a 6-4 game.
- Woods ended a 1-2-3 sixth inning with a strikeout.
- Costaro hit her second home run of the night, a three-run opposite field shot, to give Delaware a 9-4 lead.
- Woods shut the door in the seventh to finish off the sweep.
GAME NOTES
- Delaware's 10-game win streak is tied for its fifth-longest in program history. It's nine straight conference wins are tied for fourth-most in program history. Its nine consecutive wins at home are tied for fifth-most in program history.
- Delaware's run-rule victory in game one was its second straight, seventh of the season, 52nd under Jen Steele, and 25th in conference play. UD won back-to-back games via run rule for the 14th time in program history.
- The seven victories by run rule this season are the second-most in program history, trailing only last season's record of 17.
- Delaware's 43 home runs this season are the second most in program history, trailing only last season's record of 57.
- Delaware improved to 77-23 in the month of April under Steele.
- Delaware has won 14 of its last 16 games.
- Scheivert played in her 200th game, 200th start, and 200th straight start. She is the ninth player in program history with 200 career games, sixth player with 200 games started and fifth player with 200 consecutive games started.
- Costaro became the 46th member of Delaware's 100-hit club. She joined Scheivert and Shaffer as active Delaware players to amass 100-career hits.
- Costaro's two-home run game was the first of her career. It is the fifth multi-home run game by a Delaware player this season, all by different players. Shaffer hit a pair against Stonehill in the season opener on Feb. 6, Gallucci homered twice against Le Moyne on March 1, Diamond hit two against UTEP on April 3, and Ellie Mulligan hit two against Middle Tennessee on April 10.
- Costaro had her second game this season with five RBIs. She also had five against Liberty on March 28. She has three career games with at least five RBIs, also done March 17, 2024 against North Carolina A&T.
- Shaffer hit her 38th career home run and 14th of the season. She is six away from tying Anna Steinmetz (44) for the program career record and five away from tying her single-season record of 19 home runs, set last year.
- Nankivell extended her on-base streak to 24 games. She has a .578 on base percentage over the streak and is hitting .429/.576/.449 since moving to the leadoff spot in 17 games since March 20. Her three walks today were a career high.
- Scheivert upped her career RBI total to 96.
- Diamond hit a three-run home run for the second-straight day. Of Diamond's 12 home runs this season, 11 have come with runners on base. She has six two-run home runs and five three-run home runs.
- Diamond became the third freshman in program history to reach 40 RBIs. She trails only Mariah Kondravy (55 - 2025) and Anna Steinmetz (44 - 2016) for most RBIs in a freshman season.
- Wilkerson has a team-best 1.53 ERA since March 15 in 18.1 innings pitched. She has a .197 BAA over that span.
- Gallucci has drawn multiple walks in a game eight times this season.
- Woods earned her third save of the season and fifth of her career.
- Delaware has hit back-to-back home runs three times this season. Including today, it also occurred on March 1 against Le Moyne (Sorella Gallucci and Bridget Chapman) and March 21 against Missouri State (Chapman and Diamond).
- Delaware is on a 10-game winning streak, trailing UCLA (12) and Delaware State (12) for longest in Division I. Oregon and Nebraska are also on an eight-game win streak. Delaware's nine-game conference win streak is fourth-longest in Division I, tied with Nebraska and trailing Howard (14), Marshall (10), and Oregon (10).

Delaware will wrap up an eight-game homestand Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. against Maryland.

Individual ticket prices will be $10 per game and $5 for youth (ages 3-12). Season ticket packages will be available at 50 percent off the single-game rate. There will also be group rates, incentives, and additional gameday experience opportunities. All seating will be general admission at Delaware Softball Diamond.
