NEWARK, Del. – No amount of rain could dampen the Blue Hens' high spirits Wednesday night as the University of Delaware men's soccer team braved wet conditions and defeated Hofstra 2-1 in double overtime in a Colonial Athletic Association matchup at Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium.
Guillermo Delgado broke the gridlock with 16 seconds remaining in the second overtime as the sophomore scored the game-winning goal to give Delaware (9-4, 2-1 CAA) the victory and hand the Pride their first CAA loss of the season.
“After struggling for the first few minutes tonight, I thought we played excellent,” said Delgado, whose double overtime goal was his fifth game-winning goal of the season. “Hofstra is a very good team, but our defense was amazing. To hold a team like that to two shots in the first half is really impressive.”
Hofstra (7-4-2, 2-1 CAA) scored the game's first goal on Maid Memic's sixth goal of the season at 19:31 mark. Joseph Holland was credited with an assist on the scoring play.
After a first half that saw Delaware outshoot Hofstra 11-2, the Blue Hens wasted little time knotting up the game after halftime as Kyle Bruno recorded his first goal of the season 2:27 into the second half.
Both teams squandered scoring opportunities down the stretch and the game remained tied until Delgado's clincher.
Ian HennessyDelaware's last two victories have both been double overtime contests and both have been won by a Delgado goal in the 109th minute as the sophomore also defeated UNCW earlier this season with a game-winning goal in the closing seconds of double overtime.
Despite only scoring one goal in UD's previous three games, the Blue Hens broke out of their offensive funk against a good defensive squad. Delaware's two goals Wednesday night marked the first time in five games that Hofstra had allowed its opposition to score.
In addition to scoring his CAA-leading ninth goal of the season, Delgado led the Blue Hens with five shots on the night, while six other Delaware players tallied at least two shots.
The Blue Hens launched a season-high 22 shots in the winning effort. In Delaware's previous three games, one win and two losses, UD had a total of just 19 shots and averaged only 6.3 shots per game.
The Blue Hens will look to carry the momentum into their next game when they travel to Williamsburg, Va. to take on CAA foe William & Mary Saturday at 7 p.m.
