Blue Hen Volleyball Extends Win Streak To Four Following Straight Set Triumph at Elon

ELON, N.C. -- The University of Delaware volleyball team eked out three tough sets as the Blue Hens won their fourth consecutive match with a 3-0 victory at Elon Saturday night at Alumni Gym.
Delaware improved to 12-11 overall and 5-3 in the Colonial Athletic Association after the taking the match by set scores of 25-23, 29-27, 25-22. The Phoenix dropped its eighth match, falling to 5-18 overall and 0-8 in league play.
The Blue Hens have won four straight contests for the first time since Nov. 2-17, 2012, and climbed back over the .500 mark for the first time since they were 7-6 on Sept. 19.
Blue Hen sophomore Autumn Jenkins led Delaware by slamming a match-best 15 kills, while junior Katie Hillman chipped in with 12 kills on the night. Chandler Bryant contributed six kills for UD, while Jill Meyers and Daria Robinson had four apiece. Julia Anderson handed out 34 assists, the sixth consecutive match she surpassed the 30-assist mark.
Taylor Hollingsworth led all players with 24 digs during the victory, while Ariel Shonk added a season-high 11 digs.
Sydney Busa and Ally Karle each had nine kills for Elon, which remained winless in the CAA during its first year in the conference.
The Blue Hens trailed by as many as five points in the first set, but used a late 7-2 spurt to go in front 21-20 on a Meyers kill. Delaware again fell behind 23-22, before three consecutive kills by Jenkins gave UD the opening set.
Delaware jumped out to a 7-3 advantage in the second frame, and the Blue Hens still led 23-20 following a Robinson kill and an Elon attack error. Later the Phoenix would stave off a pair of UD set points and the teams were eventually tied at 27-27, but Hillman posted a kill before Elon committed an attack error to give Delaware the set.
Neither team lead by more than three points during the first half of the third set, before the Blue Hens used a four-point surge to forge ahead 20-16. Later in the stanza the Phoenix took two consecutive points to pull within 24-22, but Hillman sealed the victory with her 12th kill of the night.
Bonnie KennyDelaware, which plays six of its final eight regular season matches at the Bob Carpenter Center, kicks off a four-match homestand on Friday by hosting Towson at 7 p.m.
