Williamsburg, Va. – The University of Delaware men's soccer team won its second consecutive game Saturday night as the Blue Hens defeated William and Mary 3-1 in a Colonial Athletic Association matchup.
The Blue Hens (10-4, 3-1 CAA) got on the scoreboard first at the 38:32 mark of the first half as Joe Dipre was able to notch his fifth goal of the season to give UD an early 1-0 advantage.
After being responsible for game-winning goals in double overtime in Delaware's last two victories, Guillermo Delgado scored his team and CAA-leading 10th goal of the season 22 minutes into the second half to give the Blue Hens a commanding 2-0 lead.
The Tribe (5-9-1, 2-3-1 CAA) did not go quietly. William and Mary cut the UD lead to one with 15 minutes remaining in the game when William Eskay recorded his fourth goal of the season.
Dipre led the Blue Hens with two assists in the winning effort while Marco Siverio led the team with a game-high four shots.
Delaware's victory guaranteed the Blue Hens back-to-back winning season for the first time since 1984-85. The Hens also notched a 10-win season for the second straight year, for the third time in the last four seasons, and for the ninth time in school history.
The Blue Hens will return to action Wednesday as Delaware hosts Northeastern in a CAA game. The matchup between the Huskies and Blue Hens will begin at 3 p.m. at Stuart and Suzanne Grant Stadium.
"This was a crucial CAA win tonight in a place that is hard to find joy. Full marks to William and Mary who pressed us until the very end and made us earn our 10th victory on the year,” said University of Delaware head coach Ian Hennessy. “I was particularly pleased for Carlos Perales who scored his first college goal tonight after battling knee injuries for two years now. It was a special night for him, and his teammates were overjoyed in their celebration with him.”
