BALTIMORE, Md. – As has been the case in the past few seasons, the University of Delaware women's basketball team was predicted to finish atop the pack of the Colonial Athletic Association as the Blue Hens were chosen second in the league's preseason poll, as announced Tuesday morning at the CAA Basketball Media Day.
Additionally, junior Courtni Green (Winchester, Va./Millbrook) and senior Joy Caracciolo (Manassas, Va./Stonewall Jackson) were picked as Preseason All-CAA Second Team and Honorable Mention selections, respectively.
James Madison, the defending CAA champions, was selected to repeat in 2015 according to a vote of the league's head coaches. Following UD's second place prediction was Drexel and Hofstra while Towson was picked fifth. League newcomer Elon was tabbed sixth with Northeastern seventh and William & Mary eighth. The College of Charleston and UNCW rounded out the poll.
The Blue Hens posted their fifth-consecutive 20-plus win season last year and return four starters and 10 total letterwinners from a team that advanced to the WNIT. Furthermore, Delaware adds five newcomers for the upcoming season.
Leading the way for the Hens is Green, a guard who averaged 10.1 points per game last season and drained 56 three-pointers, good for second all-time in UD single season history.
Also representing Delaware with preseason honors, Caracciolo averaged 8.9 points and 6.4 rebounds per game last season.
JMU's Precious Hall was selected as the CAA Preseason Player of the Year.
The league's television schedule was also announced at Media Day, with the Blue Hens being featured once during regular season action the American Sports Network when Delaware travels to James Madison on Feb. 15.
The 2015 CAA Women's Basketball Championship will be held March 13-16 at The Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, Md. Tickets are currently on sale via CAAsports.com/tickets.
