BALTIMORE, Md. -- The defending conference champion University of Delaware men's basketball team was picked eighth in the Colonial Athletic Association Preseason Poll while senior guard Kyle Anderson was selected Preseason Honorable Mention All-CAA at the league's Basketball Media Day held Tuesday at The Center Club.
Northeastern was selected to win the conference title according to a vote of the conference's head coaches, media relations directors, and media members. William & Mary was picked second in the poll, followed by Hofstra, Drexel and James Madison. College of Charleston was selected sixth, ahead of Towson, Delaware, UNCW and Elon.
Anderson (Newark, Ill./Newark) started all 35 games during the Blue Hens' record-breaking season in 2013-14 when UD finished 25-10, captured the CAA regular season and tournament crowns, and advanced to the NCAA tournament for the fifth time in school history. Anderson ranked fifth on the team by averaging 11.0 points per game, while he tied for the team lead and tied for third in the league with 85 three-pointers made, one shy of the UD single season mark.
Anderson reached double figures in 18 games a year ago, including a career high 29-point effort at Charleston Southern when he tied the school single game record by hitting eight three-pointers. He currently ranks third in UD history with 215 career three-pointers made and needs just 14 more to become the school's career leader.
Marcus Thornton of William & Mary was named the CAA Preseason Player of the Year and was joined on the first team All-CAA by Scott Eatherton of Northeastern, Juan'ya Green of Hofstra, Damion Lee of Drexel, and Andre Nation of James Madison. The second team consisted of Adjehi Baru of Charleston, Quincy Ford of Northeastern, Dion Nesmith of Hofstra, Omar Prewitt of William & Mary, and Cedrick Williams of UNCW.
Anderson, Tavon Allen of Drexel, Ron Curry of James Madison, and David Walker of Northeastern were each selected honorable mention.
The CAA television schedule was also announced at Media Day, with the Blue Hens having eight regular season games televised this season. Delaware's contest at Stanford on Nov. 25 will be broadcast by the Pac-12 Network, while the Nov. 30 game vs. Villanova at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia will be televised by Fox Sports 1.
The Blue Hens' home game against CAA rival Drexel on Jan. 17 will be broadcast by The Comcast Network, while the Feb. 7 game at Northeastern will be shown by Comcast SportsNet. The Comcast Network will televise the home game against James Madison on Feb. 10, while NBC Sports Network will broadcast the road contest at William & Mary on Feb. 14.
