NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware men's soccer team was unable to close out the victory Wednesday as Northeastern scored the final two goals of the game to clinch a 3-2 come-from-behind overtime victory over the Blue Hens in a Colonial Athletic Association contest at Stuart and Suzanne Grant Stadium.
Wednesday's game was the third overtime game in UD's last five contests. The 3-2 defeat was the first time Delaware has lost a regular season overtime game since a 5-4 double overtime defeat to Seton Hall last season. The Blue Hens also lost to St. John's 2-1 in overtime last season in the NCAA Tournament.
Ian HennessyAfter allowing an early first half goal to Northeastern's Frantzdy Pierrot, the Blue Hens (10-5, 3-2 CAA) tied the game when Ben Asante put a diving header into the back of the net. Kyle Nuel was credited with the assist on Asante's third goal of the season.
Delaware then took the lead three minutes into the second half when Guillermo Delgado scored his team and CAA-leading 11th goal of the season on a free kick from just outside the box.
Northeastern (6-9, 3-2 CAA) answered UD's score when Ackim Mpofu headed in a corner kick from Donovan Fayd at the 71:25 mark to tie the game at two.
As time ticked down in regulation, both squads had opportunities to take the lead, but neither could convert the would-be game-winning goal and the matchup headed for overtime.
Once in overtime, the Huskies wasted little time sealing the win as Pierrot headed in a corner kick from Daniel Arvidsson just 1:07 into overtime to record his second goal of the game and give Northeastern the 3-2 victory.
Delaware has now lost three of the last four matchups with Northeastern and, with the loss, UD missed a chance to get one step closer to clinching a CAA Tournament berth.
In addition to scoring the Blue Hens' second goal of the game, Delgado led Delaware with four shots on the day, while Asante,Ben Sampson, and Joe Dipre added two shots each in the losing performance.
The Blue Hens will return to action this weekend as UD travels south to face Charleston in another CAA game with postseason implications. The contest between the Hens and Cougars will take place Saturday at 7 p.m. at Patriots Point Soccer Stadium.
