NEWARK, Del. – In a rematch of the 2013 Colonial Athletic Association Championship game, the reigning champion University of Delaware field hockey team was victorious once again with a 3-2 win over No. 18 Northeastern Friday evening at Fred P. Rullo Stadium.
With the win, the Blue Hens clinch a spot in the 2014 CAA Tournament and extend their conference-winning streak to 12 games dating to last season and improve to 10-6 on the year and 4-0 in CAA play.
Vanessa Pryor got the Huskies (11-4, 2-1 CAA) on board first, but Delaware junior Michaela Patzner (Rosenheim, Germany/Karolinen Gymnasium) responded less than 30 seconds later to tie the game at 1-1 on a penalty stroke.
Patzner (at left) gave the Hens a 2-1 advantage in the 30th minute off a penalty corner with an assist from sophomore Esmée Peet (Zeewolde, The Netherlands/RSG Slingerbos).
Jacki CoveleskiPatzner finished the game by tying a career-high with five points on two goals and one assist.
Delaware freshman Emmeline Oltmans (Baarn, The Netherlands/Het Baarnsch Lyceum) collected six saves in the win.
Becky Garner was credited with the loss despite making six saves of her own.
“We knew today would be a battle between two great teams. We were fortunate to pull it out in the end as it could have gone either way. Northeastern is a great, well-coached team. Defensively, we came up big a couple of times and on the attack we remained poised. In all, we never stopped fighting and I think that's the reason why we pulled it out in the end.”

“This was a big win for us. We know we beat them twice last year, but it's a new year and they've been having a tremendous season.”
