CHARLESTON, S.C. – After a sluggish start, the University of Delaware men's soccer team was able to rally in the second half to salvage a 2-2 tie against College of Charleston Saturday in a Colonial Athletic Association contest.
With the tie, the Blue Hens earned one point in conference standings and moved closer to clinching a CAA Tournament berth. The Blue Hens' playoff fate will be decided in UD's final two games this week vs. Drexel and Elon.
“It's important to give our guys credit for picking up an invaluable point on the road tonight in Charleston,” said Delaware head coach Ian Hennessy. “We are desperate to make the playoffs for the fifth time in six years, but we are quite literally limping home this season. Top marks to our players for making the adjustment tonight to continue to stay alive in the playoff picture."
After both teams went scoreless in the first half, the Blue Hens (10-5-1, 3-2-1 CAA) fell behind early in the second half when Charleston's Trent Rieflin recorded his first goal of the season to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead.
Charleston (2-9-2, 0-4-2 CAA) was looking for its first CAA victory of the season and the Cougar defense contained the potent Blue Hen offense for much of the game.
Delaware was held scoreless until the Blue Hens recorded two goals in two minutes to capture their first lead of the game.
Carlos Perales scored his second goal of the season to get Delaware on the board and, moments later, UD took the lead when Ben Asante tallied his fourth goal of the season to give the Hens a 2-1 lead at the 68:50 mark.
The Cougars then answered the Blue Hen scoring flurry when Troy Peterson scored his second goal of the season to knot the game at two.
The game moved to overtime, where the two teams registered seven combined shots, but neither team could convert for the win
The Cougars outshot the Blue Hens 18-16 and both goalkeepers made seven saves on the night. Kyle Bruno led the Blue Hens with three shots, while four other Blue Hens launched two shots each.
Saturday's game was the fourth overtime contest in UD's last six games and second overtime game in a row for the Hens.
The Blue Hens will return to action Wednesday for their final road game of the season against Drexel. The matchup between the Dragons and Hens is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
