HARRISONBURG, Va. – The University of Delaware field hockey squad continued its Colonial Athletic Association winning streak in exciting fashion Friday evening as the Blue Hens defeated James Madison University, 6-5, in double overtime to open conference play.
With the win, the reigning CAA Champion Hens have tallied nine straight league victories dating to last season.
Jacki Coveleski (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) registered the game-winning goal after receiving a pass from freshman Taylor Lister (Hummelstown, Pa/Lower Dauphin) three meters inside the circle. The two teams exchanged goals throughout the first half before junior Michaela Patzner (Rosenheim, Germany/Karolinen Gymnasium) gave Delaware (6-5, 1-0 CAA) the 3-2 halftime advantage.
The Blue Hens started the second half strong as sophomore Meghan Winesett (Centreville, Va./Westfield) collected her third goal of the year to go up, 4-2, in the 39th minute.
Delaware held a 5-3 lead with less than three minutes remaining in regulation before the Dukes (6-3, 0-1 CAA) forced overtime with back-to-back goals from Danni Wilson and Adrienne le Vatte.
UD and JMU combined for six shots and five saves in both overtime periods before Coveleski snapped a 28-minute-plus scoring drought with her victorious goal.
Sophomore Esmée Peet (Zeewolde, The Netherlands/RSG Slingerbos) led the Blue Hens with two goals while classmate Marjelle Scheffers (Amersfoort, The Netherlands/Stedelijk Gymnasium Johan van Oldenbarneveld) and Patzner added one goal and one assist apiece for Delaware.
Redshirt freshman Fran Orella (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) made her second consecutive start and recorded two saves in 97:38.
Junior Taylor West tallied one goal and two assists in the loss for the Dukes. Hannah George started the game between the pipes for JMU and allowed five goals with four saves. Despite making four saves in nearly 34 minutes of play, Sara Kraeutler was credited with the loss after giving up the goal to Coveleski.
“I am happy for our team to pull out the win tonight, but we made it much more difficult for ourselves than necessary. I am proud that we played to win all during regulation and the two overtimes to total 97 minutes of competing, believing and not giving up. Tonight we have taken another step forward in our team growth. We now also have the opportunity to revisit some areas that we further have to improve on in order to make our performances better and our lives easier on the turf.”
