College of Charleston Rallies For Five-Set CAA Volleyball Victory Over University of Delaware

NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware volleyball team took two of the first three sets but the College of Charleston rallied to win the final two as the Cougars posted a five-set victory over the Blue Hens Friday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Charleston took the thriller by set scores of 23-25, 25-23, 21-25, 25-18, 15-11 as the Cougars improved to 17-9 overall and 9-2 in the Colonial Athletic Association. Delaware, which dropped its third straight match, fell to 12-14 overall including 5-6 in league play.
Blue Hen junior Katie Hillman paced the Blue Hens by slamming a season-high 20 kills, while she also tied her career-high with 17 digs and and made a season-best five blocks. Alexa Swann posted double figure kills for the third consecutive match with 12 kills, while Chandler Bryant added 11 kills to go with a season-high seven blocks.
Julia Anderson (left) handed out 53 assists on the night, while Taylor Hollingsworth (below) added 25 digs and Ariel Shonk chipped in with a season-high 13 digs.
Melissa Morello posted 23 kills and 17 digs to lead Charleston, while Andi Zbojniewicz recorded 38 digs.
The first set was tied at 19-19, but Delaware took the next three points and eventually put the set away on a kill from Swann. The Blue Hens rallied from six points down in the second set and the teams were eventually knotted at 23-23, but the Cougars claimed the next two points to pull even at a set apiece.
Delaware used a four-point run in the third set to break away from an 18-18 deadlock, and took the set on a kill from Autumn Jenkins followed by an Erin Layne service ace. However the Cougars roared out to a 13-4 advantage in the fourth set and led from there to force the deciding fifth frame.
Charleston led by as many as three points in the fifth set, but Delaware drew even at 11-11 following a Hillman kill. However the Cougars' Sloane White answered with two kills, before a pair of Charleston blocks gave the visitors the match.
Delaware closes out its four-match homestand on Sunday when the Blue Hens host Northeastern at 1 p.m. at the Bob Carpenter Center.

• Katie Hillman's 20 kills tied for the most by a Blue Hen this season, along with Chandler Bryant at Northeastern
• Hillman recorded her team-leading eighth double-double of the season
• Julia Anderson reached the 50-assists mark for the third time this year

• Delaware's 14 blocks were a season-high
