WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Meghan Winesett (Centreville, Va./Westfield) collected her first career hat trick Sunday afternoon as the sophomore led the University of Delaware field hockey team to a 5-3 Colonial Athletic Association win over William & Mary at Busch Field.
A Preseason All-CAA team selection, Winesett doubled her season goal total to six after recording just the third hat trick for the Blue Hens since the 2009 season.
Classmate Esmée Peet (Zeewolde, The Netherlands/RSG Slingerbos) recorded two goals for the second straight game as Delaware improved to 7-5 overall and 2-0 in league play.
The Blue Hens and Tribe (4-8, 1-1 CAA) traded goals through the first 50 minutes of the contest before UD took the lead for good.
Winesett collected a pass from freshman Krissy Mikelson (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) along the baseline in the 52nd minute for the team's fourth goal of the afternoon.
Less than two minutes later, Delaware took advantage of a penalty corner as Peet put the Hens up, 5-3, off assists from Mikelson and her sister, junior Allie Mikelson (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus).
Both Allie Mikelson and Krissy Mikelson, alongside junior Michaela Patzner (Rosenheim, Germany/Karolinen Gymnasium) finished the day with two total assists apiece while sophomore Marjelle Scheffers (Amersfoort, The Netherlands/Stedelijk Gymnasium Johan van Oldenbarneveld) also had an assist for the Blue Hens.
Redshirt freshman Fran Orella (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) collected five saves in her third start of the season.
William & Mary's Emma Clifton picked up two goals in the Tribe loss. Meredith Savage registered six saves for W&M.Rolf van de Kerkhof“I'm excited for our players as they continue to raise their performances and their ability to take care of game details. We had to battle a number of on-field challenges versus JMU and W&M this weekend, but found ways and worked together to take care of them. As a team, we are thrilled to be 2-0 in CAA competition. We can be a very good team and today we took another step in this process. This past weekend's experiences and performances will provide us with the desire and energy to continue our journey.”
