Delaware Continues Road Stand With Weekend Contests at Princeton and Towson

NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware field hockey team concludes a four-game road stand this weekend as the Blue Hens travel to non-conference opponent Princeton (6 p.m. Friday) before facing Colonial Athletic Association rival Towson on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Meghan Winesett (Centreville, Va./Westfield) collected her first career hat trick last Sunday as the sophomore led the Blue Hens to a 5-3 CAA win over William & Mary at the Tribe's Busch Field. Classmate Esmée Peet (Zeewolde, The Netherlands/RSG Slingerbos) added two goals for the second straight game as Delaware improved to 7-5 overall and 2-0 in league play.
HEN SCRATCHINGS
· Delaware is 47-46 (.505) all-time in CAA action.
· Dating to last season, the reigning CAA Champion Hens have won 10 straight conference games.
· Redshirt Freshman Fran Orella (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) has filled in nicely for the injured Emmeline Oltmans (Baarn, The Netherlands/Het Baarnsch Lyceum) between the pipes as Orella was named the CAA Rookie of the Week this past Tuesday. For the season, Orella has started three straight contests and recorded 248 minutes of action. She is 3-0-0 with 10 saves and 2.55 goals allowed.
· Junior Allie Mikelson (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) is currently ranked first nationally with six defensive saves, the most for a Delaware player since Michelle Drummonds posted seven during the 2009 campaign.
· As a team, the Blue Hens are ranked third in the NCAA with eight defensive saves through 12 games played, the most since 2009 when UD recorded nine in 20 games.
· Junior Michaela Patzner (Rosenheim, Germany/Karolinen Gymnasium) leads Delaware with 18 points on six goals and six assists. She continues to climb in the Blue Hens record books and has 75 career points (29g, 17a), which is good for 13th in UD history. Jodi Byrd (1995-98) is 12th in the program record books with 79 career points on 35 goals and nine assists.
· Kristen Holmes-Winn is in her 12th season as the head coach at Princeton. The veteran coach guided the Tigers to the Ivy League's first-ever national championship in 2012 and over her tenure has led Princeton to 10 Ivy League titles, nine NCAA tournament appearances and a 148-69 overall (.682) and 75-5 (.938) Ivy record.
· Delaware alumna Carly Campana Powell '05 is in her second season along the sidelines for the Towson field hockey program. Campana was a midfielder for the Blue Hens 2004 CAA Championship squad that advanced to the NCAA Tournament. She was also an assistant coach for UD under Carol Miller during the 2009 and 2010 seasons.
ABOUT PRINCETON
Just two years removed from a NCAA National Championship, the Tigers are currently 3-7 on the season and have lost three straight after compiling three consecutive victories in the middle of the season. Princeton squared off with No. 13 Syracuse last Sunday and took the Orange down to the wire before eventually falling, 4-3, in double overtime. In the midst of a solid senior season, Sydney Kirby leads the Tigers with 11 points on five goals and an assist, with all five goals coming off penalty corners. Junior goalkeeper Anya Gersoff matched a career-high with 12 saves against Syracuse and currently has 58 for the year. Gersoff has logged 703 minutes between the pipes and allows 2.39 goals per game.
ABOUT TOWSON
Predicted to finish last in the CAA Preseason Coaches Poll, Towson is 2-8 on the year and 0-2 in conference action. The Tigers have lost three straight with three consecutive shutouts to La Salle (2-0), William & Mary (4-0) and James Madison (8-0). TU takes on Columbia in the Big Apple Friday at 3 p.m. before hosting Delaware on Sunday. Stacey Mackintosh guides the Tigers with seven points (2g, 3a) while Courtney Branco has posted a team-best three goals for Towson. Megan Boyle started nine games in goal with a CAA-leading 62 saves and 3.26 goals allowed per contest while Emilee Woodall started the team's last game and has 35 saves on the year.
