LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- University of Delaware softball sophomore Carolyn Szymanski has been named an NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete for the 2013-14 academic year, the organization announced this week.
Szymanski, a business major at Delaware, was selected to the CAA All-Rookie Team last spring after leading the Blue Hen pitching staff with 12 victories, 131 innings pitched and 94 strikeouts. She fired the 15th no-hitter in school history during an 8-0 victory over Monmouth on Mar. 2, and also fired shutouts against Drexel and Lafayette.
Szymanski, a native of nearby Middletown, Del., was also a standout at the plate where she hit .253 with a team-leading four home runs. Additionally Szymanski ranked second on the team with seven doubles, while she tied the UD single game record by hitting three doubles during the 23-2 win over UMES on Apr. 2.
Szymanski, who spent the 2013 fall semester at Coastal Carolina before transferring to UD over the winter, was the fourth Blue Hen honored by the NFCA for compiling a 3.5 grade point average or higher during the 2013-14 academic year.
