NEWARK, Del. -- The defending Colonial Athletic Association champion University of Delaware men's basketball team officially opened its 2014-15 season on Tuesday afternoon with an afternoon practice inside the Bob Carpenter Center.
The Blue Hens, coming off a tremendous 2013-14 campaign in which Delaware went 25-10, captured the CAA regular season and tournament titles, and advanced to the NCAA tournament for the fifth time in school history, feature a revamped roster looking to remain among the upper echelon of the league.
Delaware returns just one starter in 6-3 guard Kyle Anderson, who averaged 11.0 points per game a year ago while starting all 35 contests. Anderson, who ranked second in the league by hitting 85 three-pointers last season, needs to connect on just 14 more from behind the arc to set a new UD record for career three-pointers made.
Junior forward Marvin King-Davis, who appeared in 27 games with 19 starts last year, is also expected to move into a starting role after averaging 5.1 points and 3.7 rebounds during his sophomore campaign. Sophomore wings Devonne Pinkard, who averaged 2.4 points per game, and Cazmon Hayes, who contributed 2.0 points, will also see plenty of playing time for the Blue Hens.
Fellow sophomores Maurice Jeffers and Barnett Harris will battle for the starting spot in the middle after each player saw limited action a year ago.
Additionally, a talented group of five freshmen should also push for plenty of immediate playing time.
During the rest of October the Blue Hens are scheduled to practice Monday through Friday, with the exception of Wednesday, Oct. 29, from 3:30-6 in either the BCC arena or one of the practice gyms.
Blue Hen basketball season tickets go on sale Monday, Oct. 13, while single game tickets go on sale Monday, Nov. 3. Delaware kicks off its 2014-15 regular season on Monday, Nov. 17 with a 7 p.m. road game at Liberty, with the home opener coming on Wednesday, Dec. 3 vs. Army at 7 p.m.
