NEWARK, Del. – NCAA Tournament action returned to Fred P. Rullo Stadium Wednesday afternoon, but the outcome as not as the University of Delaware field hockey team hoped for as the Blue Hens fell to Kent State, 2-1, in one of three Play-In games.
Hannah Faulkner, one of the nation's top scorers, put the Golden Flashes (11-10) ahead in the 12th minute after receiving a pass from Julia Hofmann.
UD responded 11 minutes later as redshirt sophomore Maddie O'Beirne (Vienna, Va./George C. Marshall) notched her second goal of the season. Sophomore Marjelle Scheffers (at left; Amersfoort, The Netherlands/Stedelijk Gymnasium Johan van Oldenbarnevelt) assisted on the play.
Kent State closed out the first half with a penalty corner goal in the 31st minute. Ines Delpech scored the game-winner off assists from Hofmann and Alayna Harris.
The Blue Hens outshot the Golden Flashes, 13-9, but Kent State goalie Andrea Rinehart registered eight saves for the win.
Delaware's freshman goalkeeper Emmeline Oltmans (Baarn, The Netherlands/Het Baarnsch Lyceum) collected three saves in the loss.
Rolf van de Kerkhof“We had some difficulties adjusting to their style of play and our biggest challenge was playing our own game. We didn't execute our game plan. Our season has now come to an end and this game is not a good representation of who we are. We did an amazing job this season with young players.”
Redshirt Sophomore Maddie O'Beirne
“It felt good to get the goal as I haven't scored in awhile and it is exciting to score in such an important game. It's tough though because we had a different outcome in our minds. This loss will propel us to work harder in the off-season. Kent State is a force to be reckoned with and they have a different style of play. It took us time to adjust to their game plan and we just adjusted too late. Everyone gave it their all and in the end, that's all you can ask for.”
· Patzner finishes the season in 10th place all-time in the Delaware career record books with 90 points (35g, 20a).
