UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Led once again by senior Katrina Steenkamer, the University of Delaware women's cross country squad posted a 16th place team finish at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships Friday afternoon at Penn State.
Battling in breezy and cold conditions, Steenkamer ran to a time of 21:50 over the six-kilometer course and posted a 45th place overall finish. She has now led the squad in all seven competitions this season.
The Hens had six others student-athletes compete on the day with two others cracking the top 100 in the field of 207. Freshman Adrienne Fraczkowski was 75th (22:20) and Melissa Mazzo was 93rd (22:33). Also for the Hens, Becky Gessler was 122nd (23:15), Liz McGroarty was 133rd (23:28); Gabby Alaimo was 139th (23:32), and Maddie Berman was 141st (23:34).
“I am proud of the team's effort today,” said Delaware head coach Wendy McFarlane. “We ran well but the other teams ran better. It was a good learning experience for our young squad. Katrina was the only athlete who had experience running at the NCAA Regional. They all ran well as a group and we had some personal best performances as a result. We look to close out the season with more personal best performances at the ECAC Championship next weekend.”
Georgetown, led by individual champion Katrina Coogan (20:06), won the team title with 38 points, edging out West Virginia by just four points. Princeton was third followed by Villanova and Penn State in the 29-team field. Delaware earned a 16th place finish with a team total of 468 points. The Hens placed in the top 20 for the 11th straight season.
Delaware will close out the season next Saturday, Nov. 22, when the Blue Hens take part in the ECAC Championships at Van Cortlandt State Park in New York City. The race will begin at 9 a.m.
