Blue Hen Volleyball Drops 3-1 Decision To UNCW in Final Regular Season Match

NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware volleyball team had four players reach double figure kills but it wasn't enough as the Blue Hens dropped their regular season finale to UNCW, 3-1, Saturday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.
The Blue Hens, who had a two-match winning streak snapped, end their regular season with a 15-16 overall record including an 8-8 mark in the Colonial Athletic Association. UNCW snapped a two-match losing skid to finish at 20-10 overall and 10-6 in league play.
Delaware finished in a tie for fifth place in the CAA standings along with James Madison, although the Blue Hens won the tiebreaker with the Dukes and will be the fifth seed in next weekend's league tournament. UD will again take on fourth-seeded UNCW on Friday at the College of Charleston, which will host the championship after winning the regular season title.
Blue Hen junior Katie Hillman led Delaware with 19 kills, while sophomore Autumn Jenkins (left) contributed 16 kills and 11 digs to record her seventh double-double of the campaign. Chandler Bryant (right) added 13 kills against just three errors to hit .500 for the night while Jill Meyers had 11 kills, her second highest total of the season.
Julia Anderson (below left) recorded 57 assists during the contest, while Taylor Hollingsworth made 22 digs and Ariel Shonk added ten.
Morgan Kline led the Seahawks with 14 kills, while Kristen Powell and Nicole Lott had nine apiece. Meredith Peacock notched 10 blocks for UNCW, while held a 14-7 block advantage.
Bonnie KennyThe Seahawks exploded for a 9-2 lead out of the gate, although the Blue Hens closed within a point at 17-16. However UNCW never relinquished the lead, eventually putting the set away on a kill by Lott.
But Delaware immediately responded in the second set, jumping out to an 8-3 advantage and never trailing in the stanza. UNCW pulled within 22-19 in the late going, but the Blue Hens countered with three consecutive points to even the match at a set apiece.
UD won the first four points of the third frame, but the Seahawks knotted the set at 7-7 and eventually surged in front 16-12. The Blue Hens whittled a six-point deficit to one at 24-23, but Powell posted a kill to give the Seahawks the set.
UNCW then dominated the fourth set, going up by as many at 10 points at 15-5. Delaware used a 10-4 run to close with 24-22, but Powell smashed another kill to end the match.

• Delaware's 63 kills was the team's fourth most of the season
• Hillman reached double figures in kills for the 11th time in the last 14 matches
• Meyers posted her most kills since she had 14 vs. Princeton on Sept. 12
• Anderson's 57 assists were her second most of the year
