Bob Shillinglaw Thursday.
The Blue Hens, coming off a 2014 season that saw the team post a 7-9 record but fall six times by three goals or less, will be looking to return to the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament for the fourth time in the last six seasons and make a return trip to the NCAA Tournament for the third time this decade.
Shillinglaw, the dean of NCAA Division I head coaches who will begin his 37th season at the helm of the Blue Hens, will welcome back 9 of his top 10 scorers from last season in addition to faceoff ace Tyler Barbarich and third-year starting goalkeeper Conor Peaks. Brian Kormondy, a first team All-CAA selection a year ago, returns as the team's leading scorer after netting 17 goals and dishing out 13 assists in 2014. Five other players who scored 10 or more goals a year ago are also back.
"The team is working very hard to prepare for the demands of our 2015 schedule. With the addition of Fairfield to the league the CAA will be a very competitive conference again this year," said Shillinglaw, who enters the season needing seven wins to reach 300 for his career at UD.
Delaware will begin its 15-game schedule Feb. 1 when the Blue Hens, who traditionally play the nation's first game of the season, head to High Point for a non-league matchup.
The Blue Hens will play eight home games at Delaware Stadium during the season, including a month-long seven-game home stand that will begin March 3 with a non-league clash with Holy Cross followed by games against Binghamton (Mar. 7), Rutgers (Mar. 14), Manhattan (Mar. 18), Saint Joseph's (Mar. 21), and CAA foes Hofstra (Mar. 28) and Towson (Apr. 4). Delaware will open its home schedule against longtime foe Bucknell Feb. 7.
Delaware's road schedule will feature matchups at High Point (Feb. 1), Ohio State (Feb. 15), Mt. St. Mary's (Feb. 21), Villanova (Feb. 28), defending CAA champion and NCAA Tournament participant Drexel (Apr. 11), CAA newcomer Fairfield (Apr. 18), and Massachusetts (Apr. 24).
Saint Joseph's, Hofstra, Drexel, and Fairfield each won 10 or more games last season while High Point, Rutgers, Towson, and Massachusetts also posted .500 or better records.
The four-team CAA Tournament will be held Apr. 28 and May 2 on campus sites of the higher seeded teams. The winner receives an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
Delaware will also play two home exhibition games in January with the Hens facing Mercyhurst on Jan. 17 and Colgate on Jan. 24.
