INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – University of Delaware women's basketball team co-captain Stephanie Leon (Northport, N.Y./Northport) earned more recognition for her hard work off of the court Wednesday as the senior was recognized as one of 93 nominees to the 2015 Allstate WBCA Good Works Team®, as announced by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association.
The prestigious community service award acknowledges a distinguished group of student-athletes who have demonstrated a commitment to enriching the lives of others and contributing to the greater good in their communities.
A two-time team captain, Leon has committed her free time to volunteering with more than 10 community organizations ranging from elementary schools to churches and environmental agencies during her four years at UD. A trueborn leader, Leon was honored this past March as the first Blue Hen to earn the Colonial Athletic Association Dean Ehlers Leadership Award, which recognizes the highest standards of leadership, integrity and sportsmanship in conjunction with academic athletic achievement.
From the 93 WBCA nominees, distinguished voting panels will select two 10-member teams comprised of five student-athletes from the NCAA Division I level and five student-athletes from NCAA Divisions II, III and the NAIA. The final roster of 20 award recipients will be unveiled in February.
“The Allstate WBCA Good Works Team® is a prominent award that honors those student-athletes who serve the community,” said Danielle Donehew, executive director of the WBCA. “We celebrate the commitment these 93 nominees have made to their respective communities and we are grateful to Allstate for recognizing these individuals for their exceptional efforts.”
Members of the Allstate WBCA Good Works Team® will be recognized during the 2015 WBCA Convention and at the 2015 NCAA Women's Final Four® in Tampa Bay, and will also participate in a local community project.
