Ian Hennessy. “Talent aside, they all share an incredible strong work ethic and couldn't be more deserving of this acknowledgement in such a strong soccer conference as the CAA.”
Earlier this week, Delaware was picked as the team to beat in the CAA after being selected No. 1 by the league head coaches in the preseason poll. Hennessy welcomes back nine starters from last year's team that won a school-record 14 games and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in three seasons.
Delgado was honored for the third time this month after being selected as one of 32 preseason Watch List candidates for the Hermann Award, which honors the top collegiate male player in the nation. Earlier, Delgado earned a spot on the TopDrawerSoccer.com national Top XI team.
Delgado enjoyed an outstanding 2013 rookie season in which he became the first freshman in team history to earn All-American honors. He tallied 35 points with 15 goals and 5 assists to help Delaware rank No. 2 in the nation in scoring offense, tallying 2.25 goals per game. He led all NCAA freshmen in goals scored and ranked No. 4 among all players in the nation.
A native of Tres Cantos, Spain (Jose Luis Sampedro High School), Delgado has quickly became one of nation's elite college players. He started all 20 games for the Blue Hens in 2013 and fired 87 shots with 47 of them on goal. He was selected Freshman of the Year by College Sports Madness and was ranked as the No. 5 freshman in the nation by Top Drawer Soccer. He also was named first team All-South Atlantic Region, second team ECAC All-East, first team All-CAA, and CAA Rookie of the Year.
Giménez (Socuéllamos, Spain/Les Parques Lineal and Zurbaran School) enters his senior year as Delaware's active career leader in games played (50), goals (17), assists (16), and points (50) while twice earning All-CAA honors. He was a second team All-CAA pick last season as a team tri-captain when he scored five goals and dished out six assists and was the CAA Rookie of the Year in 2011 when he tallied 10 goals.
Barbero (Valladolid, Spain/Apostolado HS) made an immediate impact for the Blue Hens in his first season in Newark after transfering from Iona College. He started all 19 games and earned first team All-CAA honors after ranking fourth in the league in goals allowed (1.24), fifth in save percentage (.737) with 70 stops, and posting five shutouts. He also earned a spot on the All-NSCAA South Atlantic Region first team.
Delaware began preseason camp Aug. 14 and will play its first scrimmage on Aug. 19 at home vs. Monmouth. The regular season opener is set for Aug. 29 vs. Sacred Heart at newly-named Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium. Admission to all Blue Hen men's soccer home games is free.
