NEWARK, Del. -- UD seniors Jessica Grisler and Heather Oakley, junior Shelby Jones and sophomore Danielle Wissinger have been named 2015 University of Delaware softball team captains, fifth-year Blue Hen head coach Jaime Wohlbach has announced.
Grisler, a native of Sacramento, Calif. (Foothill HS), has started all 160 games during her first three years at Delaware, while her .333 career batting average would be the fifth highest in UD history. She enters her senior year ranked sixth in school history with 173 hits, and needs 33 more to set the new Blue Hen record. Grisler also ranks fifth at Delaware with 95 runs scored, tied for sixth with 28 doubles and 233 total bases, and eighth with 23 stolen bases.
Grisler was named the team's Offensive MVP for the third consecutive year in the spring, when she started in rightfield and batted leadoff during all 48 games. She led the Blue Hens with 51 hits, 31 runs scored, nine doubles, 24 RBI and 21 walks, while she ranked second on the team and eighth in the Colonial Athletic Association with a .327 batting average.
Oakley, an Orland, Calif. native (Orland HS), appeared in all 38 games while making 33 starts during her first year in Newark. Oakley, who made all but three of her starts at first base, batted .216 with 21 hits, 12 RBI, five runs scored and four doubles.
Jones, a native of Lake Forest, Calif. (El Toro HS), has appeared in all but two games during her first two seasons as a Blue Hen and is tied for 11th in UD history with seven career home runs. Jones started all 48 games in leftfield last season, tying for second on the team with three homers, third with 18 RBI, and tied for third with 16 runs scored. Jones, who earned the squad's Sportsmanship and Blue Hen Awards for the second consecutive season, belted a grand slam and an inside the park homer during a doubleheader sweep of UMES on Apr. 2.
Wissinger, a Hagerstown, Md. native (North Hagerstown HS), started all 48 games as the Blue Hens' catcher and played every inning behind the plate as a freshman. Named the team's Defensive MVP, Wissinger threw out 16 runners attempting to steal during the year. She also batted .252 at the plate with 31 hits, six doubles, nine RBI and eight runs scored in her rookie season.
The Blue Hens return eight position starters and their entire pitching staff from last year's squad that finished 23-25, as UD will look to qualify for the CAA Tournament for the fourth time in five years under Wohlbach this spring.
