The University of Delaware women's soccer team was unable to get on the scoreboard Friday afternoon as the Blue Hens fell to Ball St. 1-0 in the first game of the Navy Invitational.
After a scoreless first half, Ball St. (3-1-1) broke the scoreless tie at the 64:58 mark of the second half with a penalty kick goal from sophomore Leah Mattingly. The goal was Mattingly's first of the season and second of her career.
“It was a disappointing result especially the way Ari Fryer stepped in for one of the best backs in the CAA [Allegra Grey],” said University of Delaware head coach Scott Grzenda. “To lose on a penalty kick is always tough, but as we told the team later, we need to take care of our chances.”
The Blue Hens (2-4) fell to Ball St. despite outshooting the Cardinals 14-3. Delaware has either matched or exceeded the shot totals of its opponent in each game this season.
Freshman Gina Tricocci led Delaware with three shots in the contest, while junior Emily Market and sophomore Natalie Zelenky each contributed two shots in the losing effort.
The Blue Hens will next be in action in their second game of the Navy Invitational Sunday against Marist. The game is set for 2:30 p.m. at the Naval Academy's Glenn Warner Soccer Facility
