Blue Hen Volleyball Opens Play at Pitt Panther Invitational With 3-0 Loss To Sacred Heart

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Three Sacred Heart players reached double figures in kills as the Pioneers defeated the University of Delaware volleyball team, 3-0, Friday afternoon at Fitzgerald Field House during the opening match of the Pitt Panther Invitational.
Sacred Heart, which evened its record at 5-5 on the year while winning its fourth consecutive match, claimed the victory by set scores of 25-22, 25-20, 27-25. The Blue Hens dropped their second straight contest while falling to 7-6 on the season.
Blue Hen junior Katie Hillman paced the UD attack with 13 kills and hit .324 for the match, while sophomore Alexa Swann added nine kills and posted a team-best .467 attack percentage. Sophomore Julia Anderson handed out a season-high 25 assists on the afternoon, while classmate Taylor Hollingsworth posted a match-best 16 digs.
Tori Kemper led the Pioneers with 12 kills, while Sarah Krufka and Makayla Dole each added 11 in the balanced effort.
Delaware led by as many as four points in the opening set, but after Sacred Heart pulled even, the Pioneers took the final three points to capture the frame. In the third set the Blue Hens used a four-point run to go up 24-23 and had two chances to close out the stanza, but Sacred Heart responded with three consecutive points to seal the victory.
Delaware continues action at the invitational on Saturday when the Blue Hens take on South Florida at 10 a.m. and the host Panthers at 7 p.m. at Fitzgerald Field House.

• Autumn Jenkins posted 11 digs, reaching double figures for the fourth time this season
• Taylor Hollingsworth surpassed the 400-digs mark for her career
• Ariel Shonk, a third team All-CAA pick from last year, made her 2014 debut following a back injury
• Sacred Heart defeated UD for the first time in school history, but the Blue Hens still lead the all-time series, 2-1
