Blue Hens Outlasted by No. 19 Old Dominion in 2-1 Overtime Loss

NORFOLK, Va. – Sophomore Marjelle Scheffers (Amersfoort, The Netherlands/Stedelijk Gymnasium Johan van Oldenbarneveld) scored the first goal of the afternoon for the University of Delaware field hockey team, but No. 19 Old Dominion countered with two tallies of their own, including one in overtime, to down the Blue Hens (4-5) Sunday afternoon at LR Hill Sports Complex.
Scheffers picked up the second goal of her career in the 24th minute off a rebounded penalty corner shot from classmate Esmée Peet (Zeewolde, The Netherlands/RSG Slingerbos).
The Monarchs quickly recovered as Rosario Villagra tied things at 1-1 in the 30th minute.
The two teams held each other scoreless in the second period to send the game into overtime before Villagra scored the golden goal in the 73rd minute to give ODU (4-4) the 2-1 victory.
Freshman Emmeline Oltmans (Baarn, The Netherlands/Het Baarnsch Lyceum) registered six saves for Delaware while Megan Hept collected three for the Monarchs.
“Although the final score wasn't in our favor today, our team continues positive growth. We are excited about the overall progress made in our performance, game plan execution, playing defense in our own defensive 25 and creating a number of quality scoring opportunities. The Blue Hens had a good week and we are looking to further improve and become more consistent playing Delaware field hockey next time around.”
