Delaware sophomore Guillermo Delgado started the game's scoring at the 12:58 mark as the sophomore registered his team and Colonial Athletic Association-leading seventh goal of the season. Delgado now ranks fourth in the country in total goals this season.
“Very pleased with the lads today. Any win against Temple and the AAC [American Athletic Conference] is an important one,” said University of Delaware head coach Ian Hennessy. “We have one more out of conference game against UMBC Tuesday. They were nationally-ranked earlier this season after some good results including a draw with Maryland away, so we expect to have our hands full, and hopefully a good crowd to support us in this local derby."
The closest Temple came to lighting up the scoreboard was when the Owls were able to put pressure on the UD defense in the closing minutes of the first half. After a Delaware foul, Temple's Felipe Liborio was awarded a free kick from 15 yards out. His kick looked destined for the back of the net, but Ben Asante was able to make a clutch block and protect the shutout.
Delgado led the way for the Blue Hens (7-2) with four shots in the game while Liborio tallied a team-high two shots for the Owls (1-6-1).
Tobias Müller headed in an Asante corner kick to provide Delaware with a much-needed insurance goal at the 77:14 mark. The goal was Muller's third in the last three games. Jaime Martinez then scored his fourth goal of the season in the closing minutes of the game to give Delaware a 3-0 victory.
In addition to scoring the second goal of the game for the Blue Hens, Müller tallied an assist on Delgado's first goal of the game. Asante was responsible for two assists on the day, giving him three assists on the season.
Borja Barbero was once again solid for the Blue Hens in goal as the senior won his sixth game of the season and recorded his fourth shutout.
The victory was Delaware's third in a row over Temple and the Blue Hens have not lost to the Owls since 1995.
After three games in six days and more than 6,000 miles travelled, Delaware will get a six-day break before it returns to action Tuesday against UMBC. The game is set to begin at 7:00 p.m. at Stuart and Suzanne Grant Stadium.
