NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware men's soccer team will look to continue its early season momentum this week as the Blue Hens host Iona on Thursday at 7 p.m. and travel to St. Bonaventure on Sunday at 1 p.m. in a pair of non-league matches.
The Blue Hens are 2-0 on the young season after a pair of 2-0 shutouts over Sacred Heart and LIU Brooklyn at Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium, and continue to receive national recognition. Delaware moved up to No. 20 in this week's Top Drawer Soccer Top 25 Poll while the Blue Hens received 25 votes in the NSCAA/Continental Tire Top 25 Poll, the fifth most votes of teams outside of the poll.
After a pair of exhibition victories over Monmouth and Maryland, UD kicked off its regular season last Friday by blanking Sacred Heart. Junior Nick DiRenzo put the Blue Hens on the board with his first career goal in the 74th minute, while Ben Asante scored off a cross from Kyle Bruno eight minutes later to add an insurance tally.
Sophomore Jaime Martinez converted two penalty kicks in the first half of Sunday's 2-0 triumph over LIU Brooklyn, while goalkeeper Borja Barbero recorded his second consecutive shutout and the seventh of his UD career. Delaware has opened its season with consecutive shutouts for the first time since 1989, and on Thursday will look to begin a campaign with three straight clean sheets for the first time since 1984.
Iona opened its season last Friday with a 1-1 draw at ACC foe Boston College, before suffering a 1-0 defeat at Boston University on Sunday. The Gaels were picked third in the MAAC Preseason Poll, while midfielders Michael Holzer and Jordan Scarlett were named to the Preseason All-MAAC Team.
The Bonnies, who were selected 13th in the Atlantic 10 Preseason Poll, will be playing their season opener when they welcome the Blue Hens to Olean, N.Y. on Sunday.
Delaware is 1-1-1 against Iona in school history, while the Blue Hens posted a 3-0 triumph a year ago in New Rochelle, N.Y. UD has won both prior meetings with St. Bonaventure, including last year's 3-0 shutout in Newark.
