Blue Hen Volleyball Team Heads To Boston For Three Matches at Harvard Invitational

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The University of Delaware volleyball team will play its first road matches of the season this weekend when the Blue Hens travel north to compete in the Harvard Invitational.
Delaware opens play at the tournament by facing Central Connecticut Friday at 4 p.m. at Malkin Athletic Center, before taking on Santa Clara Saturday at 10 a.m. The Blue Hens conclude the invitational when they take on the host Crimson at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
Delaware is 2-2 on the season, as the Blue Hens took one of three matches at the season-opening UD Courtyard by Marriott Invitational last weekend before defeating Delaware State on Tuesday.
Sophomore outside hitter Autumn Jenkins leads the Blue Hens and ranks eighth in the Colonial Athletic Association with 3.00 kills per set, while junior Katie Hillman is second on the squad with 2.53 kills. Junior middle hitter Jill Meyers is hitting a team-high .296 during the young season, while Alexa Swann has added 29 kills and a team-leading 18 blocks.
Sophomore libero Taylor Hollingsworth, who was named to the UD Courtyard by Marriott All-Tournament Team last weekend, leads the Blue Hens and ranks seventh in the conference by averaging 3.87 digs per set.
Central Connecticut opened its season with losses to Indiana, Connecticut and New Hampshire at the UConn Tournament. Heather Trueman led the Blue Devils with 32 kills, while Rachel Dunlap was named the Molten/Northeast Conference Defensive Player of the Week after posting 15 blocks.
Santa Clara kicked off its year with three victories at the Hofstra Asics Invitational, before posting a three-set victory at Army on Tuesday. Sabrina Clayton is averaging 4.36 kills per set and hitting .417 for the Broncos while Nikki Hess has posted a .422 attack percentage, as the team is hitting an incredible .435 during the early going. Kirsten Mead has handed out 12.8 assists per set, while Danielle Rottman leads the defensive effort with 39 digs.
Harvard will be opening its 2014 season this weekend.
Delaware is 7-1 all-time against Central Connecticut, although the teams have not played since 2004. The Blue Hens won their only previous matchup with Harvard in 1996, while Saturday's contest will be the first ever match between UD and Santa Clara.
All three of the Blue Hens' matches will be streamed online for free on the Ivy League Digital Network.
