NEWARK, Del. -- Blue Hen sophomore Guillermo Delgado scored his first two goals of the season as the University of Delaware men's soccer team used an offensive explosion to remain unbeaten and defeat Iona, 6-2, Thursday night at Stuarat & Suzanne Grant Stadium.
Delaware, which has opened the season with three consecutive wins for the second straight year, posted its highest goal total since a 7-1 thrashing of Howard on Oct. 23, 2013.
“I think it was coming,” said Delaware head coach Ian Hennessy. “We won our first two games, but we all felt we weren't firing on all cylinders. But tonight we were able to score an early goal and that set the tone for the rest of the game. We just had a good game; Iona is a good team and is well-coached, but six goals was the explosion we were looking for and knew was coming.”
Junior Nick DiRienzo (below) opened the scoring just 2:44 into the match when he scored off assists from Jaime Martinez (at left) and Ignacio Martin, while Martinez scored off a Joe Dipre assist in the 22nd minute to give the Blue Hens a two-goal advantage.
Delgado, the CAA Preseason Player of the Year and a member of the Hermann Award Watch List, got into the act by scoring off a feed from Martinez at the 33:26 mark, while just over three minutes later Dipre collected a rebound off the crossbar and found the back of the net to make it 4-0.
Iona cracked the scoreboard just 25 seconds later, the first goal UD had allowed on the year, but Ben Sampson scored off a rebound 10 minutes into the second half to increase the margin to 5-1. After Jon-Luke Ferrandino scored for the Gaels, who dropped to 0-2-1 on the year, Delgado scored his second goal off the night in the 65th minute to close the scoring.
Blue Hen junior Paul DeFeo made his first start of the year in the Delaware goal, making three saves
to pick up the victory.
"We are very pleased for the group tonight who put on a fun performance in front of a young and energetic crowd," said Hennessy. "The players had felt over the weekend that we hadn't played well enough to please two good crowds, despite the wins. However, the squad talked after the game about how happy they were that tonight's crowd could leave not only with another win, but entertained with six excellent finishes."Junior Nick DiRienzo (below) opened the scoring just 2:44 into the match when he scored off assists from Jaime Martinez (at left) and Ignacio Martîn, while Martinez scored off a Joe Dipre assist in the 22nd minute to give the Blue Hens a two-goal advantage.
• Delgado posted the fourth two-goal game of his career
• Martinez handed out a pair of assists for the first time in his career
• Delaware improved to 2-1-1 against Iona in school history
• The Blue Hens will look to remain unbeaten on Sunday at St. Bonaventure at 1 p.m.
