NEWARK, Del. – The score wasn't indicative of the game the University of Delaware field hockey squad played Sunday afternoon as the No. 18 Blue Hens held their own in a 5-1 loss to No. 2 North Carolina at Rullo Stadium.
The Tar Heels, who upset No. 1 Maryland Friday night, tallied just two goals in the first half as freshman Emmeline Oltmans (Baarn, The Netherlands/Het Baarnsch Lyceum) held her own with four saves against one of the toughest offenses in the nation.
Jacki Coveleski (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) and Michaela Patzner (Rosenheim, Germany/Karolinen Gymnasium) connected once again this weekend in the 60th minute as Coveleski put a Patzner pass into the top left corner of the net.Charlotte Craddock and Gab Major tallied two goals apiece while Emma Bozek dished out two assists for the Heels.
Oltmans finished the game with a season-best seven saves while UNC's Shannon Johnson registered three saves.
“We've seen a huge improvement since preseason. Carolina is going to be the No. 1 team Tuesday when the new polls come out. To take it to them from time to time is really phenomenal for a very young and talented Blue Hen group. In the first half, other than the goals, our stats were pretty much the same. In the second half, aside from two five-minute spans, we played with them. We competed today and were not afraid to put it to them. Emmeline [Oltmans] played phenomenal. She kept us in the game a few times and did a tremendous job.”
Jacki Coveleskiand Michaela Patzner combined for 12 points in this weekend's contests against UNC and Richmond.
· North Carolina improves to 6-1 all-time against the Blue Hens.
· Delaware's lone losses this season have come against Top 12 ranked teams.
· UNC held a slight 3-2 advantage in penalty corners.
