NEWARK, Del. -- On Sunday, Feb. 8, the University of Delaware will host its annual National Girls & Women In Sports Day (NGWSD). The two-hour event will take place in the Delaware Field House beginning at 10 a.m.
Free and open to all Blue Hen girls 5 to 12 years of age, participants will interact with UD women's athletics & recreation student-athletes and coaches in hands-on sport-specific fun. Participants must register in advance as space is limited. No equipment is needed by participants, however, comfortable athletic attire and sneakers are strongly recommended.
Participants will also take part in poster-making during check-in from 9:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. to support Blue Hens women's basketball as Delaware battles Colonial Athletic Association opponent UNCW. Tip-off for the game is slated for 2 p.m. at the Bob Carpenter Center, and all participants registered for the NGWSD event will receive a complimentary ticket to the game. During the game, the girls will then be invited to form the Hens High Five Tunnel during halftime.
Fans wishing to participate in the NGWSD can register for the event by clicking here. Deadline to register for the event is 4 p.m. on Friday, January 30 or until filled. The event is subject to availability on a first-come, first-served basis and all participants must register in advance. Day of registration will not be available.
National Girls and Women in Sports Day began in 1987 as a single event in Washington, D.C. to honor Olympic volleyball star Flo Hyman. Since then, the day has grown into a nationwide celebration across all 50 states. The day can always be attributed back to the work Hyman did as an athlete and for her work to assure equality for women's sports.
NGWSD has become a day to acknowledge the past accomplishments of female athletes and recognizing current sports achievements of women in sports.
