HARRISONBURG, Va. -- University of Delaware junior forward Marvin King-Davis scored a career-high 31 points but the Blue Hens could not get enough defensive stops down the stretch as UD dropped an 88-82 decision to James Madison Wednesday night at the JMU Convocation Center.
The Blue Hens, who dropped their second straight game while falling to 4-16 overall and 3-6 in the Colonial Athletic Association, shot 44.6 percent from the field, knocked down a season-high 12 three-pointers and handed out 17 assists. However the Dukes (13-9, 6-3 CAA) shot 54.2 percent and went 16 of 21 from the foul line while posting their highest point total of the season to hold off Delaware.
King-Davis, whose previous high was 18 points last season vs. Bryant, went 10 of 17 from the field and 11 of 13 from the foul line for the Blue Hens, and also led the team with eight rebounds. Devonne Pinkard and Chivarsky Corbett each added 12 points for UD, Kyle Anderson contributed 10, and Kory Holden chipped in eight points and eight assists.
Jackson Kent paced the Dukes with 19 points and knocked down five three-pointers, while Tom Vodanovich added a season-high 17 points to go with a team-best eight rebounds. Yohanny Dalembert also scored 17 points for JMU, while Ron Curry contributed 15 points and eight assists.
“Defensively we obviously weren't good enough tonight, but credit James Madison for that,” said Blue Hen head coach Monté Ross. “A lot of our offensive numbers were good, but we just didn't play good enough defense. Our guys did a really good job of moving the ball against their zone and getting the ball inside. Marvin (King-Davis) is a very confident kid, and having that added weapon will help us down the line.”
After an even opening nine minutes, Delaware used an 11-2 run to take a 27-19 lead on a Corbett triple at the 7:20 mark. The Blue Hens were still up 34-30 following a King-Davis layup with 3:35 on the clock, but the Dukes closed the half by scoring 10 straight points to take a 40-34 advantage into the break.
Delaware went down 10 points twice early in the second half, but eventually pulled even at 63-63 before a Holden three-pointer put the Blue Hens in front with seven and a half minutes to play.
The game was tied with three minutes left, but Curry converted a three-point play to put the Dukes up for good at 76-73 with 2:53 on the clock. UD was down only one but Pinkard missed a three-pointer, while Vodanovich scored at the other end to make it an 80-77 game with 52 seconds to play. Holden then missed inside for Delaware, before the Dukes hit all eight of their free throw attempts in the final minute to put the game away.
Delaware returns home on Saturday to host the College of Charleston at 2 p.m. at the Bob Carpenter Center.
