NEWARK, Del. – In a battle between two of the top offensive teams in the country, No. 12 Liberty was able to break down the Delaware defense for a 6-2 victory over the No. 13 Blue Hens Sunday afternoon at Fred P. Rullo Stadium.
The Flames (9-3) posted the first goal of the afternoon in the fourth minute from Abby Julius before Delaware junior Meghan Winesett (Centreville, Va./Westfield) collected the equalizing goal just before halftime.
Coming out of the break, Liberty notched three goals within a minute and a half timeframe, including two from Ashlee Krulock, to open the second half of play with the 4-1 advantage.
Sophomore Taylor Lister (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) brought things within two at 4-2 in the 44th minute with her third goal of the season for the Blue Hens (11-3).
The Flames did not stop there however as Sarah Gipe and Hannah Jones gave Liberty two more scores in the 51st and 69th minutes for the 6-2 final.
Sophomore goalie Emmeline Oltmans (Baarn, The Netherlands/Het Baarnsch Lyceum) finished the game with three saves.
“Congratulations to Liberty, I think they played a number of minutes of very good hockey against us today and that was the difference halfway through the second half. I thought that we came back nicely at the end of the first. We talked about how we needed to bring the fight the second half and I don't think we brought the fight at all; at least not as a team and this is a team sport. I think today's performance is an opportunity for us to reflect and understand that we really have to play as a team and execute regardless of who we play and what the score is.”
