BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The University of Delaware women's cross country squad will return from a two-week layoff Friday when the Blue Hens take part in the 42nd annual Paul Short Invitational at Lehigh University.
The Paul Short run is one of the largest cross country meets in the nation with more than 5,500 athletes from over 400 college and high school competing teams. The day-long event gets underway at 9:30 a.m. with the men's open race and concludes with the girls' high school JV race at 5:45 p.m.
Delaware will compete in the women's six-kilometer race at 10:15 a.m. and the women's College Gold 6k Race at 11:45 p.m.
Head coach Wendy McFarlane's squad will be competing for the third time this season after placing second at the season-opening Lehigh Invitational on Sept. 4 and second at the Delaware Invitational in the team's last outing on Sept. 12.
Delaware, which placed 34th in the team standings at Paul Short last season, is led by junior Betsy Erlanger and freshman Lauren Zodl, who have both enjoyed outstanding performances in the first two meet.
Zodl placed sixth to lead the team at Lehigh and was second at the Delaware Invitational while Erlanger captured the individual title at the Delaware Invitational and was 10th at Lehigh.
The Blue Hens will return home next week, Saturday, Oct. 10, to host the Delaware Blue-Gold Invitational at White Clay Creek State Park in Newark, Del.
