NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware women's soccer team rallied for two second half goals but could not come up with the equalizer as the Blue Hens dropped a tough 3-2 Colonial Athletic Association decision to James Madison Friday night at Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium.
Delaware fell to 5-6-1 overall and 0-2-1 in conference play following the defeat, which was played in a steady rain for most of the night. The Dukes, who won their second consecutive match, improved to 8-4 overall and 2-0 in the CAA.
The Blue Hens found themselves trailing by three goals with 26 minutes remaining, before making the valiant comeback attempt. UD junior Natalie Zelenky took a short feed from Krista Trinidad and deposited a shot from five yards out into the bottom right corner of the cage with 25:26 remaining, scoring her team-leading eighth goal of the season.
Delaware closed within one with 4:21 to play when Trinidad won a loose ball from a Dukes defender and blasted a low shot from the right side into the left corner of the net, but although the Blue Hens mustered a few chances in the final minutes, JMU hung on for the victory.
Scott GrzendaRachel Ivey put the Dukes on the board in the 35th minute with a rocket from 20 yards out into the top left corner of the goal, while less than three minutes later Allie Bunner scored on a backheel in front of the cage off a free kick. Both assists were credited to Ashley Herndon.
Herndon then added an unassisted marker in the 64th minute to make it a three-goal game, before Delaware began its comeback.
The Blue Hens remain home on Sunday to host CAA rival Towson at 1 p.m. at Grant Stadium.
