MT. PLEASANT, S.C. -- The University of Delaware women's cross country team will looking to put in season-best performances Saturday morning when the Blue Hens hit the pinnacle of their season and take part in the Colonial Athletic Association Championships at the College of Charleston.
The Blue Hens, who will be in action for the first time since Oct. 17, will be among nine teams battling for the women's team title. The women's six-kilometer race will begin at 10 a.m. on the Laurel Hill Plantation Course followed by the men's eight-kilometer race at 11 a.m.
Meet information and live scoring will be available online HERE.
Delaware, which has posted three second place team finishes in meets this season, will be looking to improve upon last year's fifth place finish at the CAA Championships. The Hens' best team finishes since joining the CAA were third place showings in 2001, 2012, and 2013. Delaware last won a women's conference team title in 1995 while members of the North Atlantic Conference.
“We have a young squad on a new course,” said Delaware head coach Wendy McFarlane. “We anticipate some good performances from all teams on Saturday. Surely our main goal is to get our individuals in the top 12-15 field as a group and improve upon our performance last season. The ladies have worked hard all summer and fall. Saturday is when they are put to the test to overcome adversity. We have to run healthy and show our confidence as a group. They are excited and ready to race.”
Delaware will take a squad of junior captain Gabby Alaimo, freshman Claire Beautz, freshman Molly Doyle, sophomore Maddy Berman, freshman Kathleen Dailey, junior Betsy Erlanger, sophomore Adrienne Fraczkowski, freshman Leanza Lopez, senior Erin McCloskey, sophomore Liz McGroarty, freshman Emily Paolucci, sophomore Angie Spadaccini, and freshman Lauren Zodl to the race.
Erlanger, who placed 21st at the CAA meet a year ago after placing 38th in 2013, leads the Blue Hens after winning the Delaware Invitational individual title earlier this season. McGroarty, who has led Delaware in each of the last two meets and won the Blue & Gold Invitational back on Oct. 10, placed 52nd at the CAA meet a year ago. Fraczkowski (32nd place), Alaimo (34th place), and Berman (52nd place) are the other Blue Hens who competed at the CAA meet a year ago. Zodl is the team's top freshman.
William & Mary has won each of the last three women's team titles and each of the last 15 men's titles.
